Vintage Chain Saws

If you ever wondered where today’s chainsaws came from, read on.

A lot of major manufacturers of chainsaws claim to have invented the first chainsaw around 1920. However, The 1830s osteotome invention of German Bernard Heine seems to be the precursor of the modern-day chainsaw. The links of the chain have small teeth for cutting with the edges set in an angular fashion and with the chain moving around the guiding blade by turning the sprocket wheel’s handle.

Another person who claims to have invented chainsaw is Californian inventor Muir, who was the first to put a chain on a blade for use in logging. However, his invention neither succeeded commercially nor practically.

Other models of early automatic chainsaws are the 1861-Hamilton saw, which was made by two men and which looked like a spinning wheel. Another is the American riding saw in the 1880s; this saw looked like a rowing machine in which cutters sit.

The “Strunk” chainsaw is a vintage chainsaw manufactured by Strunk Manufactor of Stroudsborough, Pa. Its carburetor is a bowl-and-float type that sits at a forty-five degree angle; it was manufactured by Tillotson. “Bulldog” is the term given to the pull starter. This is a heavy and unique piece of machinery, with the casing containing beaver decal. The bar, measuring around twenty inches, is also called Strunk and has a half-inch chain.

In 1926, German mechanical engineer Andreas Stihl won the patent for the “Cutoff Chain Saw for Electric Power”. Stihl was born in 1867, and was also a founder of a company that produces a steam boiler prefiring system in Germany. In 1929, he patented the first chainsaw powered by gasoline, called the tree-felling machine; it was the first hand-held mobile chainsaw meant for cutting wood. He is credited as the inventor of the mobile and chainsaw run by motor.

The chainsaw presented during the summer of 1905 at Eureka, California, is credited as the world’s oldest chainsaw. It is driven by two cylinders, is cooled by water, and has marine-type motor set at ninety degrees from normal. The inventor is unknown.

Joseph Buford Cox, an experienced chainsaw operator of gas-powered chainsaws, is acknowledged as inventor of a revolutionary new chainsaw.

In 1972, Atom manufactured its own brand of chainsaws and is known as the first chainsaw company to come up its own line of chainsaws with electronic ignition and turbo action, with a self cleaning and patented air cleaner.

Things to Consider When Purchasing a Chainsaw

A chainsaw is a very powerful tool. If you have purchased a chainsaw or looking to make a purchase it's always wise to consider some of the very important aspects of owning a chainsaw.

First off if you don't have a chainsaw the first thing to think about is the weight that some of these saws can weigh. I suggest when you're in the market for a saw is to go to your local home improvement dealer and check out what they have to offer. You will able to pick them up and see actually what they weigh.

The next thing to consider is the length of the cutting bar that is on the saw you're looking at. Some models come out with the minimum cutting bar for the saw. All dealers will have larger cutting bars to fit the saws. One of the reasons for purchasing a larger cutting bar is you will be able to cut through a larger log.

I have always found it best to purchase a name brand chainsaw such as Stihl, Husqvarna and McCulloch to name a few to choose from. They have been around much longer and they have strived to meet and build a top quality product with all of the latest safety features available. When you purchase one of these products you can plan on dependability for years to come.

In the first time purchasing a chainsaw you will need to get a separate gas can for the mixed gas that your chainsaw will need. You can find the mixing oil at most any retailers, but its best to make that purchase from the one you buy your saw from and to write on the gas can mixed gas. When making your purchase you will need bar oil to go alone with your saw. The bar oil is specially formulated to stay on the bar when in use.

Also make sure to get a file to go alone with your saw. It is very important to keep the chain sharp. Be sure to ask what the size of the file is you will be needing for the cutting chain. There is on the market today guides that can be used on a dremel tool that also works great, but when your using these tools they will reduce the life of your cutting chain. Because you tend to leave the grinding tool on to long, so be careful not to grind to much. It's best to practice with an old cutting chain to get used to it.

When you have come to the point your ready to make that purchase I would like to suggest in most small towns you can find a local chainsaw dealer that also does repairs. They will be able to give you more information on what you may be looking for and tell you what could be a better buy. Most likely all of the big retailers will send your chainsaw to the local repair man where you will also be able to purchase the same product from them. Where they can direct you in getting a bigger cutting bar and the file you will need. They also have at these local saw repair shops grinders to sharpen your cutting chain if you do not know how to. I admit it takes time learning how to sharpen the cutting chain.

Here is a good suggestion for learning to sharpen your own cutting chain. First if you have a vise is to place it in it and to secure it there or on the ground in a stable position. Next the best rule of thumb is to stroke the chain at least three times per side. This way you will have your chainsaw cutting in a straight line. A sharp chain is a productive day of work.

Chainsaw Repair - Learn How to Preform Proper Maintenance on Your Chainsaw

Chainsaw repair is not for the unskilled. This is a very dangerous tool, and if something goes wrong, you could easily lose an arm, or even your life if not careful. However, if you insist, I will show you how to preform some proper maintenance on your chainsaw.
You are going to need these list of tools:
- Screwdriver or Rivet Punch
- Protective Gloves
- A chain sharpener
- a chain mender; one that is used specifically for chain saws.
- Chain Lubricant
- A Degreasing Agent
The whole point of preforming maintenance on your chainsaw is to keep it up to spec, and to make sure you do not hurt yourself, or someone else while using it. A malfunctioning chainsaw can get a very dangerous thing.
Each time you go to use your chainsaw, it is best to check all the scews on the bar, and around the finger guard to make sure they are all tight as possible.
Make sure that the kickback protection bar is secure. If this isn't, and the chainsaw kicks back, the chain is going to come flying at you injurying you quite badly.
While you check the kickback bar, make sure it, and the chain are properly lubricated.
Finally, in the regular maintenance of your chainsaw, you will check the fuel filter. This is to make sure there are no fuel leaks, as we all know that that could be quite disastrous.
Now, if you do not have a fuel filter, because your saw is electric, then inspect the cable, and connectors for wear and tear, including to the cable insulation.
See, that wasn't to hard now was it. Now, if all of these check out, you are good to go. If something is off, such as the screws, well, tighten them. If there is a fuel leak, or the cable is in need of replacement, it is best to consult someone who specializes in repairing chainsaws.
So, for the simple maintenance check ups, it is fine to do your own chainsaw repairs. For anything major that needs to be done, please, for your own safety, consult a professional.

Trying to Convert a Lawnmower to a Go Kart

Building a go-kart using an old lawnmower engine isn't nearly as easy of a job as it might sound. That's because karts and mowers are built differently. In order to use a mower engine, you will need to make some adaptations. Once you've done so, however, you can have a go-kart for a relatively small amount of money.
Lawnmower engines are designed with vertical shafts. To convert them for go-kart use, you can't just tip them onto their sides, because the oil in them wouldn't be able to circulate in order to lubricate the engine properly. You will need a gearbox that will convert the motor you have to one that will operate a go-kart. As you can see, this is going to take some expertise, and a novice mechanic probably isn't going to be able to handle the job unassisted.
Here is one method of converting a lawn mower engine into one that will work on a go-kart. First of all, you need to put a gear on the bottom of the engine which will turn gear that turns the axle. If you're like me, you wouldn't have a clue how to do this and would want to hire it done; however, with a few mechanical skills or a friend who knows about engines, you should be fine with this step. What you're needing is bevel gears with a disengage lever to separate them. You will also need brakes that will activate whenever you pull the disengage lever. Get rid of the choke. Instead you're going to need a gas pedal which can be installed on the floor of the kart near where your feet will be.
If you decide to look online for information regarding converting a mower to a go-kart, you're going to find a lot of conflicting information. What one person will tell you to do contradicts the advice you get from someone else. One website advocates the method described above while others swear that it will never work. Therefore, unless you have basic mechanical skills and know-how, or you like to mess around and see what you can come up with, you'll probably be better off getting professional help or buying a ready-built go-kart.

Best Chainsaws - How to Decide Which One is the Best Chainsaw For You

With the large variety of chainsaws offered on the market these days, it is very hard to answer the question:
Which are the best chainsaws are and which one is best for your needs.
Deciding which is the best chainsaw for you depend upon your preferences, the type of tasks you have in mind for your new saw and the price range that is right for you.
Some chainsaws are less expensive than others. Homelite chainsaws, McCulloch, and Poulan chain saws are relatively lower priced than Husqvarna, for example. With all the price differences you need to understand that all these brand names offer quality well engineered chainsaws and you should not be concerned wit the brand name but with your needs and budget.
Ask yourself:
Do you really need a powerful chainsaw or do you just plan to do some trimming in the garden? - This is the main question to answer.
If you are only planning to do some garden work every now and then - an electric chainsaw would be fine for you. These are mostly lightweight saws that are easy to handle by inexperienced users. Electric chainsaws are also a bit cheaper than the gas chainsaws.
If you have in mind some heavy tasks for your chainsaw - choose the gas saw as it is most of the times more powerful and is portable so you can carry it around with ease.
Don't buy a super powerful chainsaw if you are inexperienced. Many people got injured by trying to use a tool that is too powerful for them. Chainsaws are dangerous tools and should be used with care.
Most important advice - get other people's opinions.
Ask around for honest reviews. Ask your friends, search online for real people's opinions. Talk to them. Ask them what kinds of jobs they do with their chainsaw and only them which brand they own. This way you would know if their experience is relevant to your needs
These points may be of help to you in deciding which is the best chainsaw for your needs.

Under fire: Tesco chief executive Sir Terry Leahy has been put in the spotlight over illegal tree felling
The chief executive of Tesco is at the centre of a row over claims that a multimillion-pound luxury property development which he is co-funding has broken environmental laws.
Sir Terry Leahy has invested millions of pounds in West Sands, a residential resort being built on the island of Phuket, Thailand.
But contractors are being accused of illegally felling eight pine trees to improve sea views for some new properties.
Protesters from the nearby village of Mai Khao have set up a manned 24-hour blockade for works vehicles to draw attention to what they say is a breach of the country's ecology laws.
According to the villagers, the trees were 100 years old and on land protected under the jurisdiction of Sirinath National Park, an oasis where giant marine turtles lay their eggs. Under Thai law, this should have guaranteed their preservation, they claim.

It has also been suggested that the trees, which were cut down with chainsaws this month, were destroyed because they shed needles which would have fallen into a swimming pool under construction.

Phuket's governor, Wichai Praisangob, said the matter would be investigated, with those responsible for any breaches of the law facing prosecution.
Phuket attracts about five million tourists each year and is popular with celebrities such as the supermodel Kate Moss.

Sir Terry, whose pay and perks package from Tesco was £5.1million last year, bought the 48-acre site with his business partner Paul Mercer in 2006. It boasts a 500-yard beachfront area.

Lawn mower speed record launched

Plans for a bid to break the world land speed record for a lawn mower are being unveiled in the New Forest.
Project Runningblade aims to propel the grass cutter at speeds over 100mph (160km/h) and will be launched at the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu.
Don Wales, the nephew of multiple world speed record holder Donald Campbell, will be at the controls of the attempt at Pendine Sands in Wales in February.
The current record of 80mph was set by American Bob Cleveland in 2006.
In the Project Runningblade attempt the machine would cover 147ft (45m) per second, covering the target mile in less than 36 seconds.
Stephen Vokins, head of the projects, said: "I'm amazed how far it's gone.
"It started as a daft idea that everyone laughed at. No-one's laughing now. Everyone is taking it very seriously.
"It's been very, very scientific. We've got all sorts of experts on board.
"We have aerodynamics experts, we have fuel additives experts, all sorts of people.
"It's just amazing how far you can take a lawn mower."
Mr Wales was the test driver for the British steam car, Inspiration, which recently broke the longest-standing world land speed record when it reached an average speed of 139.843mph (225.06km/h) in California, smashing the 1906 record.
The Project Runningblade team has worked with mower manufacturer Countax and is hoping to raise funds and awareness for Great Ormond Street Hospital and Wessex Heartbeat.

Indoor Gardening is Eco-Friendly

Indoor gardening has many benefits. It's an eco-friendly way to detoxify the air inside your home, provides chemical-free herbs for your kitchen, adds beauty to your home's décor, and reduces your stress level significantly. People across the globe are trying their hand at indoor gardening and are finding it to be a very enjoyable and productive hobby. Do you feel you have a black thumb rather than a green one? There are several varieties of indoor plants and herbs that are hardy and easy to grow. Think of these plant additions to your home as natural air cleaners and built-in décor.

Easy to Grow Indoor Plants

1) Chinese Evergreen - for homes with low-light conditions, this plant is ideal. It requires very little maintenance, so it's a great choice for beginning gardeners.

2) Weeping Fig - this plant is extremely hardy and will survive despite long periods of little tender loving care.

3) Chamaedorea Palm - you'll love this plant addition if your décor lends itself to a tropical theme.

4) Cactus Combo Bonsai - these wonderfully unique plants are ideal for most any climate since they adapt easily to changes in temperature and moisture levels.

5) Braided Ficus Tree - an adaptable indoor tree that requires little fuss to thrive.

6) English Ivy - fantastic choice for hanging baskets or topiaries

7) Boston Fern - ferns only require feeding roughly once a month and love high humidity, so they're ideal for a bathroom or greenhouse.

8) Peace Lily - a fantastic air purifier that also provides great greenery and blooms.

Easy to Grow Indoor Herbs

Herbs do require a bit of maintenance, but the rewards far outweigh the care required to make them thrive in an indoor environment. You'll need a location that receives at least six hours of full sun per day. Always enrich your soil before planting the herb seeds. Good drainage is key to growing healthy herbs indoors.

1) Mint leaves - be sure to grow this one separately from your other herbs, as it tends to be invasive. Excellent in tea

2) Lemon Grass - purchase a stalk from the store and then cultivate it in a few inches of water - voila, your own plants

3) Chive - needs less light than some other herbs

4) Parsley - slow growing, but once it's established, it's a great kitchen herb to have on hand

5) Bay Tree - slow growing, but worth the wait

This is not to say that you can't grow oregano, sage, thyme, rosemary, basil, and cilantro indoors. These simply require more specific growing environments and a bit more attention. If you have the proper environment and the time to dedicate to them, try growing these herbs indoors as well. Indoor gardens are eco-friendly, but the benefits reach even further than being good to the environment. Indoor gardening is an option to just about anyone, making it a good fit for homeowners, renters, or even those on the road in a recreational vehicle. Indoor gardening provides healthy food in the way of herbs and provides natural air cleaners in the way of decorating accessories. Indoor gardening is a win-win situation both for the environment and the gardener.

Growing and Caring For a Thyme Garden Herb

If you have considered growing thyme and or have been curious about the many ways it can be used then this article will be of benefit to you. Thyme garden herb is native to the Mediterranean but is cultivated all over the world. This plant is very useful in many ways and is commonly known for its culinary value. But, let us not overlook the fact that this herb too has an enormous amount of medicinal uses.

Growing and caring for thyme is not a difficult task and can be cultivated either in a container or in the ground. If you are growing thyme specifically for culinary purposes I would recommend you grow this herb in a container for easy access and ongoing harvesting.

There are bout three hundred and fifty species of thyme. Some of the most common are garden or common thyme and golden thyme which are both used primarily for cooking, flavouring and seasoning foods. Thyme too is used to treat ailments such as coughs, menstrual cramps, aches, pains, parasites, fungus, bronchial ailments and anaemia. The oil of the various species of thyme releases their own unique aroma and is used as an aromatherapy to balance and calm ones irritable mood.

Thyme loves well drained soil and full sun as it performs and thrives at its best when these elements are present. So, if in fact you are growing this herb plant indoors you will want to ensure that it is placed in a good location receiving at least four to six hours of good sunlight per day. In the same respect, if you are growing this herb outside you too want to ensure that the location is optimal allowing it to receive the same amount of sunlight each day so that it can thrive as it should.

This herb is part of the mint family and grows plentiful. So, if you are in the mood to share you may be excited to know that this herb can be propagate by root divisions, cuttings and seeds. Should you decide to grow thyme from seeds it will take about one year to mature. When growing from seeds you should sow in March and cover them very lightly with compost. However, most gardeners would opt to cultivate from root divisions as it is a much speedier process. When choosing this method you will want to divide the roots in April. To do this, you would remove as much of the soil as possible from around the roots of the plant and separate it in about three pieces and replant; or, as stated earlier just give some of your separations to friends or family so that they too can enjoy the wonderful benefits of this plant.

One of the great benefits of thyme is that it is not high maintenance and requires very little to flourish. Just as long as your plant receives the essentials such as the appropriate amount food, sunlight, water and some tender love and care you are on your way to receiving the full benefits of one of the most powerful and versatile herbs on earth.

Another benefit of growing thyme is that you really do not have to worry about pest or disease; as stated before it is a very low maintenance herb plant. However, it is not totally immune and can sometimes get invaded but it is very rare that this will occur. So, to avoid any possible headaches pay attention to the care tags of this herb and be sure to not over or under water your plant, provide it with the appropriate sunlight, soil and TLC.

After a few years this herb will produce fewer and fewer leaves and become woody so harvest often and enjoy your thyme garden herb as much as humanly possible.

Backyard Design

Since backyard design takes place behind the house, it may not be obvious as you drive down the street, but there are changes taking place in backyards everywhere. We are spending more time relaxing on our decks and patios after long work weeks. We're leaving the comfort of our air conditioned interiors to entertain and cook outdoors.

This shift is changing the way we approach backyard design. Increasingly, backyards are being compartmentalized, encompassing a wide range of inviting spaces designed for recreation and relaxation.

Technology plays a key role in helping us spend more time with our families, and to make the most of the spaces we have - both inside and outside the house. Advances in outdoor lighting make exterior areas more inviting after dark.

Heaters and outdoor fireplaces provide greater comfort and extend the outdoor season. Backyard design can now transform your barbeque into an outdoor kitchen, able to provide gourmet meals. Innovations have made pools and hot tubs more affordable.

The development of durable, weather-resistant materials for furniture and fabrics continues to enhance the style and comfort of outdoor furnishings. However, successful backyard design involves more than adding accessories.

Backyard landscaping ideas are best approached as part of the overall home designing process - one that considers the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces. When porches, decks, and patios are planned as integral parts of a new or renovated home, they can be designed to create transitions that are so subtle they blur the line between the house and the landscape.

When planning outdoor spaces, take backyard design hints from your home's indoor rooms. By designing exterior areas with the same attention given to an indoor room, you can create a place to gather with your family, or escape after a long day at work.

These outdoor rooms can have floors, walls, ceilings, comfortable furnishings, and decorative accents, just like your living room. Keep in mind the outdoor elements which will dictate fabric choices, life cycle of your furnishings, and how your backyard design will work with local wildlife.

Throughout your backyard, spaces should vary in shape, size, and character. Relaxing spaces, for instance, should include comfortable seating, while dining areas need sturdy tables and outdoor cooking amenities. Both should be positioned for afternoon shade.

While some areas are for sitting, others should be for standing or strolling, and at least one area should be for activities - especially if you have children. How you divide the overall plot into these spaces will be determined by its general size and shape, how you usually spend your outdoor time, and the composition of your family.

A combination of several cozy areas has a way of feeling larger than a single medium-sized space. If there's no room to divide, lay out paths, patios, or lawns diagonally or along an S-curve. This makes a yard appear bigger by allowing it to unfold gradually rather than in a single glance.

Paying attention to details, such as paving materials or planting zones, also makes a small space seem larger. This is because it takes longer to visually absorb all of the elements.

With larger spaces, you can divide them into smaller, functional spaces, so they appear more inviting and manageable. When you're planning your backyard design, identify areas for cooking, dining, entertaining, gardening, and activities. Determine how much space is needed for each.

Also define areas that you wish to leave natural. I have a natural area at the rear of my plot and it really comes in handy for depositing grass clippings weeds, and other natural debris, while providing a natural barrier between homes.

Regardless of size, backyard spaces should be clearly defined and conveniently connected. This may be as simple as changing the paving materials - like stepping from a stone patio onto a lawn. Building a low step between two such areas will distinguish the spaces while preserving the open feeling.

It takes time to implement the plans for a backyard design. Take it slow and tackle one area at a time. Don't be surprised if it takes longer than you expected.
You will probably change plants and make improvements over several years. Start with areas closest to the house because you can see them from the indoors and because they will be used most. And finally, address any urgent outdoor needs up front - such as storage needs or play areas for children.

With a good backyard design, you will enhance your outdoor experiences for many years to come. ENJOY!

Correct Watering Techniques For Your Lawn

Your lawn and garden can do a lot to increase the value of your property and to increase its attractiveness on the market when you get ready to sell. However, landscaping is a long term commitment of time, energy and money. Regular care and maintenance are necessary to protect your investment and keep your plants looking vibrant and healthy throughout the year. However, learning to water your lawn and garden more efficiently can significantly reduce the cost of upkeep of your landscaping.

When to Water

When you water has a significant impact on your overall water usage. The best time to water your lawn and gardens is in the early morning hours just around sunrise and in the evening around sunset. These times give the ground a better chance to absorb more of the water before it evaporates. If you wait to water until later in the day, then you are wasting water. During the hottest part of the day water is evaporated into the air quickly, before it has a chance to penetrate into the ground or to do your plants much good. You can reduce evaporation in your garden and flowerbeds by topping the soil with mulch.

Frequency

How often you water your landscape also has an effect on how much water you use. It is better to water thoroughly once or twice a day than to water moderately periodically throughout the day. You should aim at peek saturation in the morning and again in the evening if you have plants that require a lot of water. Saturating the ground improves your water usage in two ways. Firstly, since more water is locked into the soil it provides a more constant source of water throughout the day. Secondly, by deeply saturating the ground you stimulate your plants to grow deeper roots which improves their efficiency in absorbing water from the soil.

You don't want to over-saturate the ground. Standing pools of water will only evaporate as the sun rises and be wasted. Water your lawn and garden until pools are just beginning to form. You can improve the water retention of your soil by mixing in compost periodically.

How to Water

Using automatic underground sprinkler systems can be very appealing to homeowners, especially those without a lot of time to devote to gardening and landscape maintenance. However, this form of irrigation is not the most water efficient. Sprinkler systems not only tend to overwater, but they also lose more water to evaporation due to the fine mists that they eject. If you are going to use an automatic sprinkler system on your lawn or garden, consider installing an aboveground drip system instead of pop-up sprinklers. Drip lines not only lose less water to evaporation, but they do a better job of deeply penetrating the soil.

The best means of efficiently watering is to do it by hand. If you use a hose and sprinkler head, or even a portable sprinkler system, then you have complete control of where your water is going and how much you are using. You can accurately gauge the saturation of the soil and eliminate excess water usage.

How to Start a Home Lawn From a Seed

Starting a home lawn from a seed is very effective way of seeding your lawn. It will help you to fulfill your dream of having a lush green lawn for your home. However, this process involves a lot of labor and requires proper care to be taken. So in this regard this article will be quite beneficial for you as it will suggest to you certain tips that will make the process of seeding your lawn quite easy.

Things to consider before you start to seed

Before you start to seed your lawn the first thing that you need to consider is which seed to purchase. There are different varieties of seeds available in the market. To make the appropriate choice you need to consider the climatic condition of your area. This will assist you in making the right choice.

The other thing that you need to consider is the condition of the soil in your lawn. For instance, if your soil cannot drain well then you have to add some amount of sand to your soil before you sow the grass seeds. This will help in absorbing the excess water and prevent the ground from becoming waterlogged.

Soils with a pH level of 6.5-7.0 are considered to be ideal for sowing the grass seeds. If your soil does not have the required ph level then you will have to add certain additives to the soil to increase its pH level.

Effective way of sowing the seed

Before sowing the seeds in your lawn you will have to carefully prepare the site for sowing. In case if you have previously sown grass seeds then you will have to remove the old grasses with the help of a spade.

If you are sowing the seeds for the first time in your lawn then you will have to remove all the stones particles from your lawn and then carefully till your lawn soil. Rake over the tilled land and lightly compressed with your feet. Then scrap the surface slightly to make grooves for the seeds.

Another thing that you must remember is that you need to enrich the quality of the soil before sowing. For this you need to add fertilizers or other organic material to the top soil. This you can add about a week before seeding your lawn.

After preparing the site you are now ready to sow the grass seeds. You can either use hand or use a spreader for this purpose.
